At 4:17 p.m., troopers responded to Route 55 North in Elk Township, after Cary's Honda passenger vehicle struck a Dodge minivan that was disabled on the right shoulder, Charles Marchan, a spokesman for the New Jersey State Police said.

Cary lost directional control, striking the Dodge, it to overturn, Marchan said. Cary and a passenger, Dominic Reyes, a recent Delsea graduate, sustained fatal injuries, Marchan said.

"Our school family is heartbroken, and our thoughts are with their families, friends, and all who knew and loved them," Fran Ciocola, the superintendent of Delsea Regional High School District said.

Ciocola said counselors would be available the school and encouraged students in need to reach out.

"In times of tragedy, our greatest strength is each other," Ciocola said. "Let's come together with kindness, compassion, and love, as we support one another through this painful time."

A 17-year-old juvenile passenger sustained serious injuries while the driver of the Dodge sustained serious injuries, Marchan said. Three juveniles in the Dodge sustained minor injuries, Marchan said.

The crash remains under investigation, Marchan said.
